Annual Shooting

As happens each year in May, the Phyllostachys bisettii shot. What was different this year was the pattern of shoots. I'm not seeing many shoots "inside" the grove. Most shoots are on the periphery, or running outside. I'm not sure if this is a nutrition issue (in the center of the grove there might be too much competition for nutrients) or perhaps a water issue (Early May was rather dry, so maybe what little rain we had never made it to the ground covered by dense foliage).

In other news, the Fargesia flowered again this year. When I went to gather seeds, I couldn't find any, so I think they had already fallen to the ground. I'll watch for F. nitiida seedlings.

The third bamboo which I got from the neighbor also shot, about a week after the P. bisettii. It appears to be a Phyllostachys, too, but I'm not sure what species. I'll try to key it out later on, after I get my book back from Rosenfeld.

Bamboo shoots

I potted a culm of my phyllostachys bissetti last fall. It made the transition to indoor plant fairly well, losing some leaves, but never exhibiting catastrophic leaf loss or curl.

Today I noticed that it's got a new shoot coming up! Awesome. Not sure if it's a shoot per se, or just a rhizome that got directed upwards by the side of the clay pot. In any case, this is a good development.
